Russian/Eng/Nat Saturday marks the first anniversary of the murder of Galina Starovoitova, a liberal reformer who represented St. Petersburg in the Russian State Duma. Her death came as a shock to Russians, who admired and respected her. She was considered a bright light, uncorrupted and unhindered by the dirty world of Russian politics. St. Petersburg, the former capital of Tsarist Russia, is a city famous for its architectural and historical treasures. Throughout its history it has been known as "Russia's crown jewel," the capital of culture, and the "Venice of the North." More recently, though, it has gained a new, less appealing reputation. Its romantic setting has become the backdrop for a series of violent, high profile murders, earning it the new title: "Russia's Capital of Crime." Around sixty thousand crimes are committed each year in St. Petersburg. More than half of those are violent in nature, involving firearms and killings. Murder has become routine here. For those reporting on the city's life of crime, there are worrying implications for the whole of Russia. Where St. Petersburg leads, the rest of the country usually follows. SOUNDBITE: (English) "St. Petersburg usually sets the tone for Russia, for better or for worse. It set the tone in 1917 when the Bolsheviks took power. In the late '80's and early '90's it was the cradle of the democratic revolution, all that started in Petersburg, not in Moscow. Now what we are seeing in Petersburg, this criminal revolution." SUPER CAPTION: Brian Whitmore, reporter, St. Petersburg Times One year ago today, State Duma deputy, Galina Starovoitova, was murdered; gunned down on the stairs of her apartment building. She was one of the victims of the almost continuous sweep of contract murders that have plagued the city. Starovoitova was one of the founders of Russia's liberal opposition, and her murder shocked the country. Many saw her as a martyr to democratic ideals. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "I do not have any doubt that her murder was and ordered killing directly connected with her political life and with her participation in the elections to the city administration." SUPER CAPTION: Anatoly Sobchak, former mayor of St. Petersburg In the months following the murders, the city's law enforcement agencies began a crackdown on organised crime, arresting many of the city's most notorious gangsters and uncovering warehouses of explosives and arms. Despite their efforts, Starovoitova's killers have never been found. Amidst the haunting beauty of St. Petersburg, crime and corruption rule. Life is cheap here. Residents must wonder if their city's reputation can ever be rescued and the glamour of its former image restored. St. Petersburg was the official capital of the Russia Empire and now a day this the informal northern capital of Russian Federation. There are lots to see In St. Petersburg: white nights, lots of rivers and canals, embankments and avenues, bridges that can open (the most famous of them is the Palace bridge), residence of the Russian emperors. Their Palaces and Park ensembles are considered be one of the most beautiful in Europe, among them: Peterhof, Tsarskoye Selo, the Winter and the Catherine Palace with world famous amber room, Gatchina Palace, Mikhailovsky castle and many others. The world-famous Mariinsky theatre, Peterhof (Russian Versailles), the Church "Savior on blood", the Winter Palace and Palace square, and much more. In 1941-1943 St. Petersburg was besieged fascist troops and had 872 days of the blockade. 1 million inhabitants and soldiers died in occupation and in battles for liberation. St. Petersburg was destroyed, but wasn't giving up no matter what. January 27, 1944 the blockade was lifted. Now, nothing but the memory of Russians recalls the enormous damage inflicted by German troops. Today, the city is in excellent condition and is one of the 10 most popular cities among tourists from all over the world due to its grandeur and beauty. Driving from Downtown of Saint Petersburg to a highway heading Moscow is a video recorded on a dash cam. Saint Petersburg (Russian: Санкт-Петербу́рг, tr. Sankt-Peterburg; IPA: [ˈsankt pʲɪtʲɪrˈburk] is Russia's second-largest city after Moscow, with five million inhabitants in 2012,[6] and an important Russian port on the Baltic Sea. It is politically incorporated as a federal subject (a federal city). Situated on the Neva River, at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea, it was founded by Tsar Peter the Great on May 27 [O.S. 16] 1703. In 1914, the name was changed from Saint Petersburg to Petrograd (Russian: Петрогра́д; IPA: [pʲɪtrɐˈgrat]), in 1924 to Leningrad (Russian: Ленингра́д; IPA: [lʲɪnʲɪnˈgrat]), and in 1991 back to Saint Petersburg. Between 1713–1728 and 1732–1918, Saint Petersburg was the imperial capital of Russia. In 1918, the central government bodies moved to Moscow.[11] Saint Petersburg is the most Westernized city of Russia, as well as its cultural capital.[12] It is the northernmost city in the world with a population of over one million.[13] The Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Saint Petersburg is home to The Hermitage, one of the largest art museums in the world.[14] A large number of foreign consulates, international corporations, banks, and businesses have offices in Saint Petersburg.
